The public generally views digital scammers with frustration and contempt. IJM Australia faced the massive challenge of shifting this perception to reveal a darker reality: many scammers are themselves victims of human trafficking. The goal was to raise awareness for “forced scamming” and mobilise support for IJM’s rescue operations. We needed to create a narrative that would stop people from simply “blocking and deleting” and instead make them realise that there is more than one victim at the other end of the blue light.
We are profoundly grateful to IJM Australia for trusting us with such a sensitive and urgent subject. Working alongside our talented Thai crew allowed us to bring a level of cultural authenticity and grit to the screen that was essential for this story. Most importantly, we acknowledge the survivors whose real-life experiences inspired this screenplay; it is our hope that this film honours their bravery and contributes to the freedom of those still trapped.
